Most Disappointing Films of 2016
These films may not necessarily be the worst of the year, but they were films that I personally were anticipated for but failed to deliver.
#5. X-Men Apocalypse
X-Men Apocalypse is not a terrible film, but it's definitely not as good as First Class or even Days of Future Past. As good as those films were, I was expecting something that was around the same level of quality as those, but I just didn't get it here. First of all, Apocalypse as a villain is just ridiculous. His costume also looks bad in my opinion. The story and the characters are weak, except for maybe Magneto. That is possibly the only character that is actually given attention when it comes to writing and Michael Fassbender, once again, gives a good performance for the character, but everybody else just gives a meh performance and the whole film just comes off that way.
#4. Jason Bourne
Jason Bourne is, again, not a terrible film. Actually, I'd argue that the action is spectacularly well shot and riveting. Also, Matt Damon is very good in the film. While the performances were great and the technicalities that this film achieves is marvelous, however, the reaons I consider this a disappointment is because the film takes a very bizarre and stupid direction of focusing on a completely uncompelling and uninteresting subplot of this social media technology thing, instead of focusing on the main plot of Jason Bourne, the actual plot we care about. This heavily hurts the film. It hurts the tension of the plot. It hurts the story. It nearly screws everything up because when it cuts to Matt Damon doing stuff, you're engaged in what's going on. But when it cuts back to this social media subplot, it literally just tears down the entire foundation of what the film was setting up.
#3. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back? More like Jack Reacher: Never Go Back To the Theater. What makes this film a disappointment is that it doesn't do anything that made the first one good. At least in the first one, there were some pretty well-directed action sequences and the movie had a unique flavor to it. Here, the action sequences are generic. I didn't care about the characters and I can't believe I'm saying this, but Tom Cruise, I felt, didn't give a good performance here. It felt everybody was there for a paycheck.
#2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is exactly how to NOT set up a superhero universe. Ben Affleck as Batman was actually a surprise and the choreography for the warehouse fight was pretty cool However, what makes me so disappointed in this movie is in its writing. This film is poorly written. I mean, where to even start with this film: the villain is awful. Jesse Eisenberg gave such an over-the-top performance, his character actually became annoying. The plot makes little sense. The fight between Batman and Superman only lasts for like 10 minutes, despite the film heavily advertising this big battle between them. Even when they fight, the payoff is so disappointing. The tension between them makes little sense. Though I will give some credit, the performance of Ben Affleck for Batman was actually decent and the depiction of Batman when he's fighting was actually pretty cool. However, I just don't think this is the film that DC fans like myself were waiting for.
#1. Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad is the most disappointing film for me because I had such high hopes for this film. The trailers looked awesome. I seriously thought and hoped that this movie would get DC back on track and have them produce great films and compete against Marvel. But, unfortunately, we have yet another giant mess of a plot. Seriously, somehow, they made the plot make less sense than Batman V Superman and I don't even know how that's even possible. The characters are awfully written and most of the casts' performances are mediocre at best. The story is uncompelling. The visual effects are mediocre. The editing is horrendous. Set pieces are uninspired. This film is somehow worse than Batman V Superman and that's such a shame because I wanted this film to be a good movie. I wanted DC to start making good movies, but unfortunately, we didn't get that here. This film is just one giant mess.
