Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) Review

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the 2017 action-adventure film directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, written by Jeff Nathanson, and starring Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scoldelario.

Plot
A boy named Henry Turner searches for Jack Sparrow to look for the Trident of Poseidon to lift a curse to rescue his father. Carina is a smart young woman who is an expert in Astronomy and Horology and is being sentenced to death for being accused of witchcraft, is also looking for the trident. Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, leads an army of undead Spanish sailors who is hunting Jack Sparrow for vengeance. Jack, Henry, and Carina must find the trident before Salazar reaches them.

Positives
To the film's credit, I will say this is a good looking movie. It has good CGI and nice looking visuals most of the time.

There were "some" humorous moments in the film that I enjoyed.

Negatives
It's, once again, a shallow film in the series. The script is poorly made.

Character composition is weak. Jack Sparrow isn't really that interesting to me in this movie, even though he's such an iconic character. Johnny Depp plays the character very well, but he wasn't directed well. The direction of this film is very bland and uninteresting. The new characters that are set up here, while they did have a somewhat decent setup, they really don't do anything interesting with these characters.

Other than some of the humor in some scenes that they force in, the film is just very dull and a bore to watch also mainly due to how bad the pacing is. A lot of scenes were forced and unnecessary.

Conclusion
Basically, these are some of the same problems I had with Alien Covenant. It's a good looking film with little substance and not much of anything else thought into the script. Except this time, there's some humor in scenes that you can get a laugh at, but there's not enough of it to make the film good.

Score: C-
