Logan (2017) Review
The Plot
Mutants are nearly extinct and the X-Men team is dead. Logan works as a driver in Texas and takes care of an old Charles Xavier, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, along with Caliban. Logan's healing factor has weakened and has aged with the adamantium slowly poisoning his body. A young girl named Laura is being pursued by the Reavers, a group of bounty hunters searching for Laura, and Logan has to rescue Laura while managing to keep Charles and Caliban alive.
The Positives
I loved the direction of this film. I think James Mangold solidly executed the dark and melancholic nature of the movie. Also, the film kinda reminded me of a Western-type film and I liked that. What I loved the most about Logan is how seriously they treat the source material. This isn't like your standard, typical superhero film. This is a serious emotional drama that fully encapsulates itself in mature and dark world.
Hugh Jackman gave, in my opinion, his best performance of Wolverine in this film, and the fact that this is his final performance as the character is astonishing. Hugh Jackman is the perfect Wolverine. Nobody can play the character than the man, and he gave it his all in this film.
The film does make use of its R-rating. You will see blood and gore, and it's amazing. Whenever Wolverine or Laura is slicing through enemies, it's great.
They were very ballsy with this film. I won't go into spoilers, but man, I liked how they made very bold decisions when it came to the script. If you see the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. You'll be shocked.
The Negatives
I thought the emotional connection between Logan and Laura was a bit too weak at the end. I think they should have built it up a bit stronger. There is a connection there, but I would have liked it to be tighter and more tangible at the end.
I think there was a pacing issue going from the middle of Act II to the start of Act III. Once it got to the very end, it got better, but I think they could have tighten that area of plot a bit more to make it stronger because it's not as strong as the other areas.
Conclusion
So, is this the Wolverine movie we were waiting for? Absolutely yes. This is, without a doubt, the best movie with Wolverine in it and they finally did justice for the character in his own solo movie. I don't even know if I'd call this a great film, but if it's not, it's pretty darn good. Pretty much the closest to great as you can get. It's certainly better than The Wolverine and a trillion times better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Edit (May 30, 2017)
I'm adding this part into the review because I'm going to change the score one last time to an A neutral. I'm not giving it an A+. I don't think it's good enough for that score. But, the reason why I raised the score from a B+ to an A is because, over time, I started to appreciate Logan even more now, especially how much the creators respect its fans. On top of that, the movie is better now that I have seen it a second time. The problem that I originally had with the somewhat odd action shots are gone now. Logan is probably one of the best superhero movies made to date, right up there with The Dark Knight.
Score: A
