Beauty and the Beast (2017) Review

Beauty and the Beast is the 2017 remake of the 1991 Disney classic of the same name, directed by Bill Condon, written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, and Kevin Kline.

The Plot
Beauty and the Beast tells the tale of a farm girl, Belle, falling in love with a beast who was formerly a dashing prince cursed by an enchantress. The beast must find true love before it's too late or else he and his servants are cursed forever.

The Positives
The visuals in the film are very nice. I liked the score. I enjoyed the film making frequent references and homages to the original, while also making a few changes that didn't appear in the original. Its technical qualities are good.

The Negatives
What I think the original did a lot better here than this version is its storytelling. It's like the director was more meticulous on the visuals than the script. I think the script here is its weakest area. The characters here don't have much depth as they did in the original and I didn't enjoy the story here as much. Maybe I'm just saying that because I've already seen the original. At the same time, though, I haven't seen the original in years, and I didn't enjoy the story here as much as I remember enjoying the story of the original years ago.

Conclusion
Overall, this is a pretty decent film. The visuals are good as usual from a Disney movie, but to me, it was a pretty okay experience. It's the "good kind of okay". Technically, there's not much wrong with it, but it lacks any "wow" to it other than the visuals.

Score: B-
