Kong: Skull Island (2017) Review

Kong: Skull Island is the 2017 monster film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, written by Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein, and Derek Connolly, and starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and Brie Larson.

The Plot
This film is placed in the 1970's after the Vietnam War. A man named William Randa is leading an expedition toward a mysterious Skull Island to discover any anomalies there. The expedition team unexpectedly runs into King Kong while setting off bombs on the island. Trapped in Skull Island, the expedition team must survive and escape.

The Positives
Some of its visual effects were good. The cinematography in areas look okay. I somewhat enjoyed the...3 parts that featured King Kong actually fighting.

The Negatives
The script is poorly crafted. You don't care about any of the characters whatsoever. The effort towards the script is probably as much effort I put into my reviews.

I felt bored most of the film because the majority of the film consists of human characters we barely care about. About 10% of the film is King Kong actually fighting something.

The action sequences aren't even that cool. The way the action is shot with frequent slow-motion shots is awful.

The plot is really stupid and heavily contrived. This wouldn't be much of a problem if the movie was enjoyable.....but it wasn't. I have no problem with awfully contrived plots, but if the film isn't good enough to where it can exceed the threshold of suspension of disbelief, then the film looks worse.

When I said some of the visuals were good in the film, I meant about half of them. Half of them are either good or okay, but the rest of the CGI and visuals look pretty bad for a film that cost $185 million.

Conclusion
Overall, the movie is pretty dumb. It's an awfully mediocre film. I would rent it or watch it on demand or something. It's good if you turn your brain off throughout the movie.

Score: C-
