The Man From U.N.C.L.E

The Man From U.N.C.L.E is an action-comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie (director of Sherlock Holmes) based on the TV series. It stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki, Alicia Vikanker, and Hugh Grant.

Plot

Set during the 1960s in the early years of the Cold War, two agents , Napolean Solo (Henry Cavill) from America and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) from the Soviet Union, team up to form U.N.C.L.E (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) in a joint operation to infiltrate and stop a terrorist organization from producing and advancing nuclear weapons and technology. Their mission is to find the daughter of a German scientist who is the only lead to infiltrating the organization.

Thoughts

To be honest, this whole movie overall is meh. The movie wasn't that bad at all, but it wasn't good either. I did find a couple of positives that I did like about the movie.

Pros

1. The movie has some really funny moments. I do like its humor and that's the biggest strongpoint of the film.

2. The movie does a good job showing detective aspects like the Sherlock Holmes movies, but at the same time, that's a problem.

Cons

1. The characters aren't that interesting. The agents don't have that much of an interesting chemistry besides the fact that they are competing against each other, but even that aspect lacks a little bit. The villain(s) are really lame. What I found weird is that they made Illya a guy with extreme anger problems, which is weird. I haven't watched the TV show, but why would their agency hire this dude when he's so emotionally unstable?

2. It's cool that the movie is trying to put detective things in the movie, but this isn't a suspense movie. This is an action spy movie. The movie just puts these things in the movie for no reason and they're out of place. I kind of forgot that this movie was supposed to be a spy thriller. These people are spies, not Sherlock Holmes.

3. There's not a lot of action for an action movie and that's the biggest disappointing factor, especially for people who plan to watch this movie. If you want to see this movie, don't expect a lot of action because there's not a lot of it, and when there is action, they aren't shot that well in my opinion. For a spy film, I expected them to use gadgets predominantly, but they don't really.

4. The film has pacing issues too. The movie drags A LOT. The movie paces itself so slowly that I was bored, waiting for another action sequence to happen.

Conclusion

The Man From U.N.C.L.E was an okay movie. It's definitely not something that you have to see. There was hardly any action which was extremely disappointing. Sure, there was some action scenes here and there, but nothing much happens through the majority of the movie. The characters aren't really that interesting except maybe Napolean Solo, but even he was a weak character on his own. I would probably only recommend this film as a comedy because this movie had some really funny moments in the film that made me laugh. Other than that, this movie doesn't have much to offer that's good and you can just give it a pass.

Score: 5.7/10
