Spotlight (2015) Review
Spotlight is a 2015 American drama film directed and written by Thomas McCarthy and Josh Singer (solely as the writer).
The Plot
The movie is about The Boston Globe's "Spotlight" team covering the Massachusetts Catholic church sex abuse scandal. The Catholic church tried to cover up sexual abuse of Catholic priests molesting minors.
Thoughts
This movie is actually REALLY GOOD. I'm not going to lie. This movie, I have to say, is probably one of the best in the entire year. I thought this movie was going to be a completely bore, but I found myself attached to this movie.
Pros
1. This movie gets better as it goes along. I like how the movie handles its own structure to make it progressively better as it goes along.
2. How the movie ended was superb.
3. I surprisingly loved the characters. In my opinion, Mark Ruffalo's character (Michael Rezendes) was the best one in my opinion.
4. The best part of the film is how it uses shock value to entice the audience, and it uses that shock value to get you invested in the film and make it dramatic. Because the fact that this stuff actually happened and the Catholic church manipulated the system to almost get away with it IS SHOCKING.
5. The acting is really good. As usual, awesome work from Michael Keaton. I think this movie is the best I've seen Mark Ruffalo in my opinion. Rachael McAdams was good. Liev Schreiber was good. Everybody did a good job.
Cons
1. I can't really find any major flaws that I can remember. And this came out in an early screening, so it's not like I can see it again to find flaws (which would be a waste honestly). The only con I can find is that the beginning of the movie could have started better in my opinion.
Conclusion
Spotlight is a great film, and it should be supported. I wouldn't say it's a total masterpiece; it's definitely not the best film of all time or something, but it's most certainly a good movie to watch. I was surprised to see that members of the Catholic church actually are encouraging people to see this movie, which is nice. Please, go see this movie.
Score: 9/10
